Excellent for newborn babys, a great baby shower gift

Goodnight Moon - book cover picture

My newborn was introduced to Goodnight Moon, since he was 4 days old. Everyother page is either in color or in black and white. I could see my newborn's pupils widen as I would flip the page from a black-and-white page to a colored page. Today, at 9 mos old, this book is his first choice to read. I would recommend getting the 'board book,' not the soft cover. My son enjoys this book so much, he likes to cuddle with it, thus slobber and chew on it!

A helluva poetic novel

Book title: The White Boy Shuffle

The White Boy Shuffle - book cover picture

I'll be honest, I don't like most poetry. So, when I saw that Paul Beatty is a poet, I was a little wary. But I very quickly realized that his poetry is what makes this novel move. Besides the array of interesting characters and odd situations this book offers, for me, it was Beatty's be-bop writing style that I was swept up in. His prose just bounces off the page at you, creating action just in the words alone.

I loved this book, I couldn't put it down and I immediately had to get "Tuff" after finishing "White Boy" (which I liked, but didn't love). I say balls to the "politically correct" that call this book racist. Here is a voice that's not heard in modern fiction and in many ways hearkens back to 50's and 60's literature (read Chester Himes, Ralph Ellison, the beats). This is a view of life, and I don't think it comes off as a judgment, it is what it is and it's funny as hell.

I know how all you guys feel. I've been checking bookstores, online and off, for the final book in her series. Both my younger sister and I love this book, and like many people, we've been waiting for the book to come out for YEARS. I should've waited for the entire series to come out...this waiting BITES. From what I've heard, L.J. became sick and stopped writing. There HAS to be someway to contact the publisher or her and plead for the final book to be released. My friend came up with the theory that the night world, or something like it, is real and it went after L.J. for exposing too many of their secrets, and thus no more series. But yea... it could happen......Anyways, write me anytime you wanna talk bout the series!

An outstanding analysis of contemporary society.

Arrested Development: Pop Culture and the Erosion of Adulthood - book cover picture

'Arrested Development' is a brilliant critique of the relationship between popular culture and today's society. Politicians with little to offer in the way of vision, turn to popular culture to try and look for a dynamism that they haven't got.Calcutt's book exposes the superficiality of this embrace and the divisive consequences it has for today's society. The author also writes with great honesty about his own forays into pop culture and all of it's follies which many of us have fallen for in our youth. The book puts forward the case for adulthood in an environment where it appears more desirable to remain a Peter Pan character espousing throwaway 'popstar' type attitudes rather than develop the critical faculties and reflective capabilities that come with maturity.

The Simpsons : A Complete Guide to Our Favorite Family - book cover picture

This is the best Simpsons book ever created. Any true Simpsons fan should get it. The best parts of the book include: Hello, Moe's Tavern..., Homer says, "D'oh", Homer says, "Mmm...", couch gags, signs seen around Springfield, an Itchy and Scratchy filmography, it gives you the words to the songs, and it tells you about every character in the book. By the way, I found the blackboard gags very amusing.

Rules of the Road - book cover picture

Jenna Boller, a sixteen-year-old girl, is the star employee at her branch of Gladstone's Shoes located in Chicago. Jenna is faced with some extremely difficult circumstances - her mother is a nurse who works the night shift at an area hospital, her father, who is divorced, is an alcoholic - and shows up periodically, her sister yearns for affection, particularly from her father, and her grandmother is suffering from Alzheimer's disease. After repeatedly asking her mother for permission to accept a summer job driving the elderly Madeline Gladstone (the president of Gladstone's shoes) on a cross-country trip from Chicago to Texas, Jenna's mother reluctantly agrees. Jenna is surprised to learn that Mrs. Gladstone has problems, too - an aching hip and an aching heart. Mrs. Gladstone's "power-hungry" son, Elden, is attempting to take over the company in favor of a major merger. This is a wonderful novel!!!!

It takes a village...

Book title: Running Wild

Running Wild - book cover picture

Amidst the sterile routines of suburban England, Ballard tells a short fable about the loving your children too much. The post-mortem objective style of the massacre's investigator adds to the unsettling tone of this novel. Like Ballard's other works (I've read Crash, War Fever, and the Atrocity Exhibition) he explores the subterranean barbarities latent in our denatured, desensitized urban landscape. This novel is hardly one to advocate nurturing our future generations, since the blank-eyed authoritarianism of suburban child nurturing is blamed for the pscychopathic massacre. Loving a child, doesn't mean that the child is free. And the children, suffocated by parental love, suburbia, and technocracy has two routes: suicide (like 'The Virgin Suicides') or murder. Ballard shows that children are far from innocent: little bundles of joy who are ticking time bombs with artificial smiles and revenge fantasies. A must read for parents and high schoolers everywhere.

I have a stack of organizational books! REALLY! This is the one that helped me most- I think it's because a lot of books out there were written by organized people and this book shows a disorganized person how to start swimming. It at least gave me a starting point. If you need support you can also find the Official SHE's in touch discussion board on the website. You will make new friends and find new challengers to help you aspire to a clean house!

The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet: The Lifelong Solution to Yo-Yo Dieting - book cover picture

I have now been on the Hellers' diet for 19 weeks and have lost 14 pounds. I'm thrilled! I'd like to lose about 10 more, but if I don't I'll be happy to stay where I am. I can count on one hand the number of times I have "cheated," because the desire to do so is gone. It's no longer a diet for me; it's a new way of eating. I cannot imagine going back to eating the way I used to, because I feel so much better now. Thank you, Drs. Heller!
