Magician: Master (Riftwar Saga) - book cover picture

This is one of the most amazing books I've read.. I've now completed the entire Riftwar Saga, and I can proclaim without doubt that this series surpases every other book in its category, including LOTR, Harry Potter, wheel of time etc. The story is beautifully weaved with enough details, intricacy and magic to satisfy even the most demanding of readers.. This is the first book I've read that has actually gone into depths about topics such as the nature of magic, concepts of time and space etc... A definite must-read!

Mortal Causes (An Inspector Rebus Novel) - book cover picture

well where to start, again rankin astuonds me with his talent. The plots always twist and turn but never to the extreme of you losing the thread, beatifully deep rich characters with a high sense of realism. I first discover rebus series a few years and now it's worse than a bad coke habit, when you "score" a new novel you just want to be left alone to devour it. must be at least on par with james ellory. if you enjoy police books then this must be the best contempory series come on ian , we want more

The Golden Spiders (Crime Line) - book cover picture

The action begins in the brownstone, (where else?) Nero has just thrown a tantrum over his meal and Archie has decided to teach him yet another lesson. We are treated to Nero coping with both a child and a grieving mother as he solves the case. All the familiar characters come out to play: Fritz and Theodore; Cramer and Stebbins; Saul, Orrie and Fred. Is this great literature to ponder? - absolutely not! This is strictly for fun, yet another entry in a long running series. A perfect way to spend an lazy afternoon escaping to New York of the 1950's, getting a few peeks into life at the brownstone and enjoying the on going battles between Nero and the world.

Fahrenheit 451 - book cover picture

This is perhaps the most thought provoking book I have ever read. Unfortunately, I missed this book in my earlier days of public education, but I have found a real treasure now. This book is very topical in the policitically-correct world in which we live. I find it hard to believe that so many of the fears that are expressed in Beatty's speech to Montag regarding why books or ideas were burned have come to fruition. In fact, the most stirring part of this edition is the coda where Bradbury's ideas about censorship are expressed in first-person. A must read for any would-be scholar.

The Luckiest Girl in the World : A Young Skater Battles Her Self-Destructive Impulses - book cover picture

A great book and an easy read. I like this one more than Levenkron's, Best Little Girl in the World, because Katie's family was a mother who was abusive at times and neglectful. It didn't have a candy coated perfect little village for Katie's environment as seen in Levenkron's first fiction book. Her mother had poor coping skills and did try, but in trying was losing her temper and becoming abusive. Showing the attempts at intervention by those outside of the home, helped to educate the reader in the need to but yourself out for someone else, because you really can save a person's life. Abuse is insidious and young people don't need to always be removed from the parent if there is intervention, stress management classes and somebody checking up on the situation. It ended well and was not graphic or gross as some of the books on eating disorders have been. It depicts measures of success and how people view their own lives and the reality of their perspective.

Shopaholic Takes Manhattan - book cover picture

I got this book from the bookstore I work at as an advanced reading copy.....I was completely estactic when I saw it on the counter and started reading it as soon as I got home that night. This book is more hilarious and funny than the first.
Kinsella writes a view from the shopaholic perfectly. This book has more closure than the first, and that makes me like it more.Becky Bloomwood does it again, doesn't she? Read this book now! I urge you to run out and get it....absolutely amazing!

Dragon's Blood: The Pit Dragon Trilogy, Volume One - book cover picture

I remember when I first read "Dragon's Blood" and the rest of the books in this series about seven years ago. I loved them dearly then and I love them even more now. There are some things that I missed the first time, but now that I am older I caught more and there is nothing that has taken away from the enjoyment of these books. I would suggest that anyone who loves dragons and wishes them to be real read this fantastic series. I find them appropriate for pretty much all ages (Parents, there is some mention of prostituion so you may want to discuss this with your children first) and they will be enjoyable to all fantasy lovers.

The Book of Hors D'Oeuvres and Canapes - book cover picture

I received this book as a Christmas gift a few days ago and have not been able to put it down since! I agree with the writer from California that it is certainly not for the new cook, but as a part-time caterer, I have finally found the ultimate source for entertaining. There are no definite cooking times listed, and it's taken for granted that the reader is familiar with basic techniques (like for preparing pastries and mousse). If you're up to the challenge, the results will be spectacular and your friends will be amazed. The photographs are beautiful and inspiring!

Eclipse!: The What, Where, When, Why, and How Guide to Watching Solar and Lunar Eclipses - book cover picture

A be-youtifully done mini-course in how eclipses happen and how the layman can enjoy observing them. I have a low tolerance for statistics, yet the details of this book are all simply stated and thoroughly illustrated. It doesn't take a lot of precision equipment to prepare for a safe viewing, and if you're prepared, you can gather your friends and say "Wow!" along with the very enthusiastic author, who warns that people have gotten hooked on eclipse-watching and -recording. The tone is just right: the first chapter answered all the questions I was ashamed to ask, without oversimplifying. Outlines are given for specific upcoming eclipses, starting with February 1998.

Innocence's tragedy & power has never been better described

Book title: The Idiot (Penguin Classics)

The Idiot (Penguin Classics) - book cover picture

The three books that have had the greatest impact on my life are The Bible, The Idiot and Les Miserables. The tragedy of Myshkin's innocence and yet its ability to shake to the core this aristocratic society (plug in any era you wish) is both a supreme goal and warning. This is not a book to read for literature (although it certainly is a great example) but for questionning what it means to be in the world and not of the world.
