The Complete Idiot's Guide to Decoding Your Genes - book cover picture

I am a middle school teacher and I used this book in my classroom to supplement the text the students already have and they absolutely loved it! Not to mention the students got a kick out of the title of this book. I would highly recommend this book to anybody who wants to know ANYTHING about genes or heredity. It is easy enough for a child to understand, but interesting enough for a person of any age. Great book!

The Last Of The Large WOT Books

Lord of Chaos (The Wheel of Time, Book 6) - book cover picture

This book is great, it has every thing you want from the Wheel of Time series but it is a little slow in some parts, possibly a little forshadowing of the next three books to come. While I enjoy the Wheel of Time series including the newer books (CoS,PoD,WH) I think this is the last of the large volumes that we will see from Robert Jordan. The three that follow this are almost 1/2 to 1/3 the size content wize - they have increased the font size to keep the physical dimensions of the books similar. Either RJ is slowing down in his writing or TOR is cashing in on the popularity and chopping the books into smaller bits.

Texas Splendor (Topaz Historical Romance) - book cover picture

This is the third book in the Texas trilogy of the Leigh brothers. In the last story we are left with Austin going to prison for killing someone who he didn't kill. When he gets out he finds that 5 years is a really long time to be gone. His promised love has married another and there are a lot of changes that he doesn't understand. In addition some people don't think 5 years was long enough for him to be in prison, and try to kill him.He sets out to Austin to find who the real killer is but along the way he finds a kindred spirit and the closest friend he has ever had.I admit that I saw the ending coming long before the ending but how it was dealt with was wonderful and helped to lead to the story.

Excellent account historically, Exciting to read

The Last Voyage of Columbus : Being the Epic Tale of the Great Captain's Fourth Expedition, Including Accounts of Swordfight, Mutiny, Shipwreck, Gold, War, Hurricane, and Discovery - book cover picture

Highly recommended and easy to read. The writer worked hard to maintain a smooth narrative flow. You will meet some formerly unknown characters who round out the story well.

This book makes you appreciate what Columbus accomplished in his voyages, but also makes you cringe at his treatment of the "native" people. However, Degard helps put Columbus' treatment in perspective by discussing the genocide carried out by his contemporary, Don Nicolas Ovando.

Finally, you must read this book if for nothing else than the discussion of the origin of the nautical phrase "poop" deck.

Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this delightful book!

Not Only for Parents, But Educators as Well

Ready for Reading: A Handbook for Parents of Preschoolers - book cover picture

I stumbled upon this book while looking for information on dyslexia. As a speech/language pathologist, I work with pre-schoolers and primary grade students with language difficulties, speech disorders and phonological disorders. This book has become a wonderful guide for my clients' parents. The authors have cleverly laid out a fun and inventive handbook for reading to any child. Each "Book Share" has valuable information to help make the reading process fun as well as valuable for various language processes and pre-reading skills without being "work". If you are an educator as I am, you probably have these books as I do already. I read a lot of these to my children when they were young... Whether a parent or educator these books are timeless. I still get warm fuzzies... You will not be diappointed. I credit these authors with a well thought out format.

A good kids book

Book title: Holes (Readers Circle)
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Holes (Readers Circle) - book cover picture

Have you ever had to do dig a hole the height and length of a big shovel every day? Well this kid had to in this book.
This book is about a boy named Stanley Yelnats who goes to a boot camp because he accidentally took a pair of shoes that are worth 10,000 dollars. He has to dig holes every day for his payment. He can leave but it is in the middle of the desert. He made friends with a kid name Zero and he teaches him the alphabet and English if he digs his holes. So is he going to stay in the desert or is he going to leave?
I will give Holes a 5 star because it is my favorite book. I will recommend it for boys because it is about a boy. I like the author because he is a funny author and mostly the other books he writes are funny like the Wayside School series. I like the characters because they're funny and the main character has a weird name.

Have a Nice Day : A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks - book cover picture

No other wrestler has impressed me like Mankind (Mick Foley) has. I was elated to hear that he was writing a book. From the minute I opened to the first page, I was enthralled. This man's life has everything that a Hollywood producer could ever hope for: lots of action, plenty of humor, and even love. He has a way of telling the story like the reader was sitting right next to Mick as it all unfolded. From the incident in Germany to defeating The Rock for the WWF title, Mick takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride that shows Mick's true character. He really shows his love and admiration for professional wrestling in this book, and the best part is that Mick wrote 100% of his book. The reader can really tell that Mick put his heart and soul into "Have a Nice Day." Mick masterfully retells the story that seems almost to entertaining to be true. Anyone can appreciate Mick Foley's colorful tale of "blood and sweatsocks."

My grandmother would be proud of my cooking from this book.

Memories of a Cuban Kitchen : More Than 200 Classic Recipes - book cover picture

I moved away from Miami, into the mono-cultural Utah and found myself going crazy realizing I couldn't get my grandmother to airmail me some picadillo or other comfort food. I had to go out and learn how to make it myself, and this is the book I chose. There are things in this book I hadn't even heard of before while living in Miami. My only complaints are that my Ropa Vieja, even when I follow it dilegently doens't seem to come out the way it should, and the Torrejas (I had never had Cuban French Toast) weren't what I had expected. Other than that, with a decent amount of time on my hands, I can even impress my grandmother, now that I'm back in South Florida. I do recommend Miami Spice or Cuban Cocina for some neo-cuisine, but for the classics, I wouldn't give this book up even if my mother wanted me to!

Yes, Jack is back!

Book title: Tripwire
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Tripwire - book cover picture

First off, the Jack Reacher series is pretty clear that Jack Reacher isn't a typical "American" so if Child uses words that seem too "British" or not American, then it could be because Jack Reacher has spent most of his life NOT living in America. And confusing The Gap with The Hole, well I'm pretty sure it's a joke designed to make you laugh. With those rambles out of the way, this book does not disappoint. Child once again creates a story driven by great characters, especially supervillian Hook Hobie. Like all of the books in the Reacher series, it is very unpredictable and keeps you guessing all the way. This is probably my favorite thus far, though at the present time I have not read past Echo Burning. As always, definitely recommended, but start with Killing Time. Helps you better understand Reacher.

Chaucer: The Canterbury Tales (Landmarks of World Literature) - book cover picture

I just adore Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. I felt a connection to many of the characters. I hate to admit it, but the prioress embodies my feminine side. Chaucer's descriptions of the pilgrims were so lifelike that I felt I was journeying along side of them. I recommend this book to all who like to read. The Canterbury Tales inspired me to go on my own pilgrimmage. I set out hoping to meet interesting characters on it, such as the characters in the afore mentioned book, however I was disappointed.
