A Very Useful Bible Resource!

Zondervan NIV Nave's Topical Bible - book cover picture

Nave's Topical Bible is a very useful Bible resource. It is ideal for looking up passages about a particular topic or term, and having all the verses in one place, stated in context for easy reference. A good example is that you can look a a term like "repentance" and it will show you all the verses that not only contain the term repentance, but it will also show you verses that explain or define repentance even if the actual word is not used. This book is a great reference tool for bringing just the scripture you are looking for into an organized topical format. It's much nicer than a concordance (although it will not replace one) because instead of just listing were a term is or part of a verse you are looking for, it brings you the entire verse in context. I highly recommend this resource and the NIV version for all NIV readers, as I believe the other Nave's Topical Bible versions are in the King James translation.

Searching for David's Heart: A Christmas Story - book cover picture

It's about a girl and an older brother (David), who both seems to be like close friends than a brother or sister. The girl seems to also admire him and likes the attention David gives her...until another girl came into the picture and it's like a love triangle situation. Darcy (David's sister) didn't like sharing the attention with the girlfriend of David's that something happened: David died after him and Darcy got into an argument. Now everything change for Darcy and she felt guilty about what happened that she thinks that the heart of David's (which someone has from a heart transplant) will show that David is still alive somehow. So, Darcy set out a journey that she (and the reader) won't ever forget and Darcy realize things that she never did realize before.
I read this story 2 times now and it touch my heart. It probably will touch your heart too...

After THE END: Teaching and Learning Creative Revision - book cover picture

I saw this book reviewed here on Amazon. I then went to the public library to review one of his other books. I liked what I saw. Then I bought this book based on the previous reviews and I'm very glad I did. It's definitely worth a 5 out of 5!This book hits the sweet spot of what I'm trying to accomplish as a tutor to some junior high school students. Barry Lane's exercises and theories fit what I've learned so far in this fun, and sometimes hilarious, quest. The book is easy to read, yet loaded with useful advice. Now that I've finished this book, I'll be getting his other books and most importantly: I'll be starting to implement his recommendations on teaching writing to children. The author is a writing in instructor in New Hampshire/Vermont. The book has a useful bibliography and he often comments on important books throughout his chapters.John Dunbar

Demolition Angel - book cover picture

The first book I read by Robert Crais was L.A. Requiem, which I thought was average, but good enough for me to track down other books. This was the first one I grabbed, and I'm glad I did. Demolition Angel grabbed me from the get-go, and I was engrossed all the way to the end. Even when I was able to predict what was going to happen next, further plot developments would turn everything around again. And the ending, although familiar, was wonderfully tense and clever. I'm not sure it deserves five stars, but I've read so many disappointments lately that it was just a nice change to read something pacy, punchy and smart. If this makes it to the big screen without too much tampering (which is probably too much to ask), I'll be the first in line.

Language Universals and Linguistic Typology : Syntax and Morphology - book cover picture

Along with Paynes "Describing Morphosyntax" (ISBN: 0521588057), this book will help any student -- or entertain any enthusiast --of languages or linguistics. It treats various types of syntactic theory in a manner that (rarely among such useful works) is clear, engaging and (in places) enthralling. While drawing on the familiar "old standards" for grammatic comparison (Russian, Dyirbal, Yakut, Hikxaryana, Japanese, etc), the way comparisons are drawn between systems reveals isomorphisms and patterns that are certainly elegant and perhaps beautiful. Comrie has, as ever, produced a thing of wonder.

The Jesus Mysteries : Was the "Original Jesus" a Pagan God? - book cover picture

This is a book that all Catholics and fundamentalists should avoid . The writers have picked up on several hundred years of Christian researchers dead ends ? where they went looking for the real Christ and found another man-made story. The authors clearly explain how the roman church distanced itself from its pagan origins thru a river of blood and then cobbled together a series of folk tales and propaganda and called it The Bible. While the authors wishy-washy conclusion is that all will be resolved when the catholic and the pagan trends get back together ? the other more persuasive argument leaping out from their pages is that Man made god and not god(s) made man - in other words the atheists argument.Despite this 1 quibble, it?s a book I would highly recommend .It should be compulsory religious education reading to counter all the usual Christian propaganda school kids have to put up with!steve

The Rape of Nanking - book cover picture

This is one book that I would hesitate to say is wonderful only because its subject matter is so terribly depressing. I appreciate Ms. Chang's refusal to completely vilify the Japanese aggressors, and her attempt to analyze the historical conditioning these Japanese troops had for mass extermination and torture of the doomed Chinese. Her book was balanced and shocked and depressed me to the core. I was also deeply disgusted by the conservative Japanese insistence that the massacre never occurred even in the face of mounting evidence. I applaud Ms. Chang's insight and refusal to allow the Nanking Massacre to become an obscurity of WWII. And as a Chines-American woman of similar background as Ms. Chang, I am inspired and emboldened to take action.

God's Children - book cover picture

This book is about the NATO troops sent into Europe to stop the Slovakian's ethnic cleansing of the Hungarians. But, niether side knows why the NATO troops are there. When the 3rd platoon must take a routine patrol, they get a new platoon leader, and another platoon leader to keep an eye on him. Well, the situation soon gets hairy, and the platoon must make their way back to their home, while dodging the Slovakian Army, and a few other unfortunate incidents. The book is full of action, suspense, and drama (a fight for power between the two platoon leaders). Though the end was some what shorter than expected, it also contained a plot turn that I didn't think would happen. But, this book reveals the human nature in combat, how we respond. This is a must read for fans of Saving Private Ryan and Clancy readers.

To Rule the Waves : How the British Navy Shaped the Modern World - book cover picture

The "Grand Sweep of History" packaged very nicely in a Royal Navy line-of-battle ship - that's what this book is all about. I can't remember when I've read a book that held my attention so thoroughly, entertained so well, and taught so much. In much the same way as tide and currents flowing though the world's far-flung oceans can be known and purposely used, Professor Herman very skillfully uses the continuity of the Royal Navy though the ages to allow the reader to flow through the course of Western Civilization. This enables the reader to "connect the dots" of 500 years of what might otherwise be only a progression of unrelated events, and, thus, come away with a sense of the whole. From this, we can then begin to draw conclusions as to where we might be going.

This is an outstanding book.
