A Perfect Romance

A Perfect Bride - book cover picture

I started this book several months ago, but put it down after the first 50 pages. Recently, I came across it on my TBR shelf and decided to give it another go and boy am I glad I did.

A Perfect Bride has been summarized already so I will add my two pennies instead.

I loved the well-written chemistry and sexual tension. My stomach was in knots through the whole novel. These two people were star-crossed lovers that belonged together. How can they overcome the complications of coming from different stations in society?
My favorite part:
When the hero had to find the heroine a husband, his jealousy and agony over his decision was palpable.

I have read the other two in the trilogy: A Perfect Husband and A Perfect Hero, and this one is by far the best.

Sara Suleri's memoir is a wonderful example of the kind of literary production our faculty memebers should be producing--inspired, original, and compelling. Her non-academic writing, like her literary criticism, moves me to believe there are still people in the academy who understand what it is all about.Suleri is definitely more cerebral than a lot of more mainstream novelists of the subcontinent, and that is to be expected. It is part of this memoirs charm that there is a pull between her intellectual curiosities/asides and the more narrative moments of pathos. This book does exactly what a memoir *should* do--it represent memories as the palimpsests that they are, all the while communicating the lingering feeling that the author associates with them. Really, a wonderful book.

Night Falls Fast : Understanding Suicide - book cover picture

It was not easy to read this book, but if I had a troubled teenager, this is probably one of the most important books I would recommend. It would probably be better to read this book with a friend or a professional. Redfield Jamison is one of the best authors out there today on the field of suicide and depression / mood swings. Her book will guide you through this horrifying and confusing topic. But her work is thorough, fascinating and scientific. I recommend it without hesitation.

...another astounding piece of work by CLAMP

Book title: Tsubasa : RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE (Reservoir Chronicles Tsubasa)

Tsubasa : RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE (Reservoir Chronicles Tsubasa) - book cover picture

wonderful story..its nice how CLAMP relates their work together somehow with other books. If you haven't read any of their previous works, I'd reccomend reading Card Captor Sakura, since Sakura is in this book, Magic Knight Rayearth may help a bit as well. It's not necessary to understand the storyline, but its a nice when you can compare how they changed some of the characters...the paper quality could be just a LITTLE better, but nevertheless its a great start off for Del Ray. The publishing price; 10.95 is a BIT expensive, since normal manga sells for 9.99 ea. But they do add on Japanese previews, and other notes at the end...so I guess that compensates in a way...

The Legend of Bagger Vance : A Novel of Golf and the Game of Life - book cover picture

Although I'm not much of a golfer (where is my "authentic swing!"), this book grabbed hold of me immediately and didn't let go. Pressfield so effortlessly transported me back to 1931, I really had the feeling I was part of the gallery watching that epochal match. His descriptions of both Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones were wonderful, but more thought-provoking were the journeys into Indian mysticism (along those lines I also recommend "Be Here Now" from the Hanuman Foundation). Even if you've never hit a golf ball, you're in for a treat with this book.

My childhood books :)

The Magic Faraway Tree - book cover picture

I read and enjoyed these books when I was a child. Even if many years have passed (i have somehow lost my copies), the stories have remained vividly on my mind. I just had to have them again! Like the other reviewer said, copies are hard to find here in the US. I got mine from Australia (Magic Faraway Tree, Folk of the Faraway Tree and Enchanted Wood). I have re-read them all, and once again brought back happy childhood memories. I will definitely read these books to my kids someday, hoping that they will enjoy it as much as I did. :)

The Insider's Guide to the Colleges, 2006 : 32nd Edition (Insider's Guide to the Colleges) - book cover picture

This is a great reference guide for parents and more importantly students. The book provided the much needed statistics on admission requirements, majors, fees, profile of student body and several additional valuable points of interest. The comprehensive description of the campus, including the best and worst of what the school has to offer was quite informative and I think provided a clear picture of what a prospective student could expect to experience. This is a must read for students and parents. I felt as if I could have been walking on campus.

Seabiscuit: An American Legend - book cover picture

This was a book club book that frankly, I was not thrilled with the thought of reading. I didn't see the movie, although I heard great things about it. After becoming used to reading fiction, I worried that this one might bore me. I couldn't have been more wrong. While the book is interesting throughout, when the horse begins to race, the book really takes off and the reader is left holding on for dear life. You feel every frustration the people feel, every pain, every joy, everything! Ms. Hillenbrand is a wonderful writer. I actually got teary-eyed twice while reading this book, once with joy and once with sorrow. Now, I'll see the movie.
