The Giver (Newbery Medal Book) - book cover picture

The Giver has now become my #1 favorite book. It's full of cliff hangers. It's the type of book once you start it you'll never put it down. It's about a boy who lives in a completely ruled world. Jonas was 12 years old when he got selected for a job in his cummunity,(Every child in the cummunity, once 12 are assighned jobs.) It seems like the pressure of the world is on his shoulders, you'll see why once you read it! We'll, the one who was selected his job to serve the cummunity before him so called" failed." So this is the story; He has been given special training by the Giver, who has secrets of the pain of life, which Jonas has never even known of. The things that he knew were of the joys of life, he gets much more of that from the Giver and gets to know and develop feelings of love, sadness ,and hertfullness. The Giver shares the real truth with him and there's know turning back, even shutting out his family ........................

An excellent continuation of the 'Future History' series!

The Cat Who Walks Through Walls - book cover picture

For anyone familiar with the 'Future History' series, this book is a must read. Although it seems that questions are left unanswered ALL questions are answered in the rest of the series. I would rate this as one of Heinlein's best works, on par with "Time Enough for Love", "Number of the Beast", and "To Sail Beyond the Sunset".The only problem is that if the series is not read in the correct order (which is not technically a series, but a collection of inter-related stories) the reader may not understand characters and references.

The Door to December - book cover picture

This was the first Koontz book that I have read. Actually i just finished reading it for the second time, and again I found myself not being able to put it down. It was full of great suspense on a weird subject. I thought the tie-ins between mind controlling experiments and politicians was almost prophetic. Dan is a great character, very untypical of a what you think a California detective should be. The only part of the book that let me down was the ending. Otherwise a great book and a must read

Delicious for girls AND BOYS!

Betsy-Tacy (Betsy-Tacy) - book cover picture

I don't quite understand why this series is only classified as engaging for females! Females have been reading and enjoying literature about boys for eons; why not expect that males would appreciate excellent literature about girls. My 6 year old son's eyes have lit up around Betsy and Tacy's deep and imaginative friendship. We have both enjoyed the first book immensely. My son is delighted to know that there are more books to enjoy in the series and so am I. He may not be interested in playing with dolls, but he has enough sense to see that the way Betsy and Tacy play with them is quite endearing.

A-List #3, The: Blonde Ambition : An A-List Novel (A-List) - book cover picture

This is one of those page-turner-can't-put-it-down type books. My friend gave it to me and I read it all through study hall, then snuck it through geometry, Amerian History and read it on the bus home from school. It's totally addictive. The main character Anna is your basic "good" girl, which I can really relate to. She's also filthy rich, which I can't relate to, but that is part of the fun. These other rich girls in Beverly Hills give her a hard time, especially the queen of all witches, Cammie, the girl you will love to hate. Cammie is more fun to read about than Anna sometimes but that is always true of the bad girl! Really they work perfect together as mortal enemies. Although this is a very light read, don't be fooled into thinking that it's not well-written but it is very well written. I consider this by far the best written series out there for teen girls. Great job, Zoey!!!

I am a first generation american, born to two Irish parent's from Derry, Northern Ireland. I always took great pride in being irish, but never realized why i should be so proud until i read this fantastic book. My father read this book years ago, and has never stopped talking about the accuracy this book portrays on how life was in ireland. He grew up there and was amazed how even the smallest details were perfect to every detail. A must read book for anyone who is proud of their Irish decent. Don't just wear green on St. Patty's day, read this book and really celebrate your heritage

Timbuktu : A Novel - book cover picture

TIMBUKTU is a lovely story about a dog's life and his impressions of the human race.It opened my eyes about the homeless, making me feel less critical of that lifestyle as well as more compassionate. Paul Auster did a wonderful job of displaying the love between a dog and its owner, and the loyalty a dog is noted for. He also made the experience of dying, or leaving this world, less frightening. I will always envision Timbuktu as a pleasant place to be. When I finished reading this very painfully sad story, all I could think was what on earth ever possessed Paul Auster to write this story? Whatever reason he had, I'm sure glad I read it.

Area 51: The Sphinx (Area 51 (Paperback)) - book cover picture

Great book - couldn't put it down. Much better than the Mission (the last book in the series). Area 51 is a wonderful sci-fi series. I can't wait to see where the story goes from here. I checked the author's web site - he's got at least 3 more books planned. I worry that he might string it along rather than stick to heart and soul of this great adventure. Mr. Doherty/Maguire/Dalton, etc, please be cautious to not dilute the action! For those of you who enjoy this sort of "alternate history" sci fi, check out Ian Douglas' Heritage Trilogy (Semper Mars, Luna Marine & forthcoming Europa Strike) - its very much in the same genre.

Great American Wreaths : The Best of Martha Stewart Living - book cover picture

Just as Martha's magazine is a joy of visual delights, this book get's the creative juices flowing. Divided into wreath making by types: wire wreaths, living wreaths, gathered wreaths etc. it is also written with a focus of wreaths presented by the 50 States with the bounties of each state proudly displayed in stunning wreath form. Maybe because it is fall and the beautiful changing leaves in Minnesota make me feel all homey, I am stirred to actual creation. Unlike some of Martha's projects when I say to myself, "yeah, sure...." I truly believe I can do these! This would make a wonderful birthday or Holiday gift to anyone who loves visual delight or poking in nature. "It's a good thing."

Great Summer Read

Book title: Genevieve

Genevieve - book cover picture

Genevieve Forbes has it all. She has a Ph.D., wonderful career, and a loving equally successful husband. Her traumatic childhood comes back to haunt her when she and her husband, the unnamed narrator of this novel, attends her grandmother's funeral in Alabama. The husband comes face to face with Genevieve's undisclosed family history as well as his own childhood demons. This novel has a lot of twists and turns that begin right away. The first four pages will leave you in shock. You know right away that this isn't a regular tale about going down south to bury a relative. Eric Jerome Dickey once again has written an extremely riveting story. This novel is a must read and should be added to your summer reading list.
