The Iliad (Penguin Classics) - book cover picture

The Iliad is a Greek epic novel written by Homer around 700 B.C. The novel describeS the burning of Troy. The Iliad The Iliad describes the end of the Trojan war. According to Homer, The son of the king captures Helen, the wife of a Greek king. You've got to read this classical tale to see how the Greeks built a large wooden trojan horse and burned Troy to a crisp. I learned this fascinating tale in 6th Grade. I loved it, and I also loved the second edition of the Iliad called the Odyssey which is another great novel!------------------------AHMED MASHHOOD--------AGE 13-------------

I couldn't put this book down. After every chapter came another mystery. This book is so happy but can be so sad. Katherine Paterson wrote a great book. The best book that I still don't get

Book title: The Sirens of Titan

The Sirens of Titan - book cover picture

This is a great book, but, as with alot of Vonnegut's books, also very profound. In fact, his books are so profound that I find I have a hard time always understanding them! Not that this fact makes his books any less enjoyable to read, but just shows how well crafted his books are on every level. On just a basic level, Sirens is just a good read, full of humor and wit. But Vonnegut also has alot to say about humanity and yes, even the meaning of life. I am not sure how to even describe the plot, but it has something to do with the predestined journey of Malachi Constant from Earth to Mars to Mercury to Earth to Titan and back to Earth again. And through this, Vonnegut makes statements about religion, fate, the military, friendship, and humanity. Not a book that is easy to wrap your mind around, but still one for the must-read lists.

I knew of this rebellion and thought to gain little from this book but a good read, as I have enjoyed this author's books before. However, I was enlightened as to perspective. My family is Irish and I can assure you that Celtic children often have insights that most adults of other nationalities lack. Even the Irish hounds have insights into character that most human adults lack. I think everyone should read this book. There is too much mis-information out there about this historic fight.

Bridget Jones's Diary - book cover picture

This book is brilliant! Hilarious story of Bridget Jones. This story had me laughing out loud (sometimes to my embarassment) whenever and wherever I was reading it. Helen Fielding is a great author and I recommend this novel to anyone of the following : those who enjoyed the movie, those who enjoyed Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, those who like to laugh, and any women. Certainly the funniest book I've ever read. There is a little bit of Bridget Jones in every women. Don't believe me? Read it yourself and you won't be disappointed.

Ways of the Hand - book cover picture

David Sudnow's phenomenological study, as Hubert Dreyfus states in his introduction to The Rewritten Account, is an altogether unique piece of work. As a (former) piano player, it inspired me to learn a piece of Bach again just so I could rediscover, for myself, some of the phenomena Sudnow describes with such depth. As a casual reader of some of the major existential and phenemonological writers, it strikes me that Sudnow, more than anyone, shows us the phenomenological perspective at work. I haven't read the earlier Harvard edition, which I've been told is very difficult, but this version certainly isn't. It's a flowing account, told beautifully, and I am sure that it will become a classic. I hope Sudnow comes through on his promise and offers us a description of learning a second language. If he makes a contribution to language studies anything like Ways of the Hand makes to the study of handicraft, that would be extraordinary.

Intellectuals Don't Need God and Other Modern Myths - book cover picture

McGrath's thoroughness makes this the single best apologetics text available today for classroom and personal use. He not only addresses specific issues, he also teaches the reader how to do apologetics by covering apologetic theory: theological basis; points of contact; the nature of faith and commitment; etc. Also, while he addresses philosophical issues, he writes as a theologian and so goes beyond arguments for God's existence and historical evidences to defend doctrinal beliefs as well. He brings in more of the human element.

In fact, it has so much info that I decided I had to summarize the book in my own words, sort of a Cliff's Notes thing. My summary topped off at 8 pages of questions and notes. The one shortcoming of the book is that it did not provide its own summary. Finally, beware: you will come across people who will misunderstand your inquisitiveness and label you as cynical and critical. It's already happened to me.

Managing Customers as Investments : The Strategic Value of Customers in the Long Run - book cover picture

This is a particularly thought-provoking book which, as have so many others, came from Wharton School Publishing. Columbia professors Sunil Gupta and Donald Lehmann have written regularly on the subject of Customer Value and Marketing over the last 20 years. Their articles and books have been standard texts for many MBA students interesting in customer value management for some time. Sunil and Donald have produced a jewel: it is so well written and convincing that, after reading it, you will rethink your customer relationships in terms of value creating opportunity and not in terms of expense.
