Deep Wizardry (Wizardry Series) - book cover picture

I got this book for CHRISTMAS and it looked really stupid. about half a year later i got so bored with my other books that i started reading it. it wasn't the best book i have ever read for two reasons 1: i read at an average of 150+ books a year and it is hard to pick favorites 2: i read a recent book that i simply fell in love with. it is by Annette Curtis Klause, and if you liked this series you will also enjoy anything by her. so A young wisards series is my second Favorite book series. i learned two things from reading this fantastic book. 1: never ever judge a book by its cover 2: i love fantsy novels!!!

Womens' fiction on a new level...

Book title: Braided Lives
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Braided Lives - book cover picture

It is very easy to group all women writers into one category, especially in the UK where it seems that every woman is a twenty-something writer of tales of lost boyfriends and work stress. Marge Piercy is a world class above these writers, depite the dodgy publiscist she has who gives all her novels terrible covers! This book is an enticing tale of women surviving in a society that does not hand them anything. It's a sobering tale for those of us who feel we have a relatively firm grasp on our lives/careers in this new millenium. Spend some time thinking about the struggle women face on the most basic level day in day out and try not to cry during 'that bit'!

Their Kingdom Come : Inside the Secret World of Opus Dei - book cover picture

Those who criticize Hutchinson for using expressions like "Octopus Dei" and proceed to espouse, in all seriousness, a war against Islam, must dislike Hutchinsons's jokes because they have absolutely no sense of humor. It is hard to call Opus Dei a cult, and hard to call it dangerous, and hard to call it a font of lies. I am sad to say, despite the thousands of devout (and deluded) adherents of its doctrines, my own experience has taught me that Opus Dei is like a whited sepulchre.Tina Bell

Another Leon Uris Treasure

Book title: Mila 18
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Mass Market Paperback
Mila 18 - book cover picture

Leon Uris is the undisputed master of fictional historical novels. Exodus, Mila 18 and Armageddon give us a view of WW-II that no other author has been able to bring to light. His characters are ordinary people set in historical times and situations. He brings you into the ghetos of Warsaw where the Nazi regime was planning the systematic removal of the entire Jewish population. For the first time in history, the Jews of the Warsaw ghetto said no! They fought back with anything and everything they had. The realization that men fought German Panzers with bricks is one of the bravest resistance movements anyone has ever seen. If historical drama, told with a personal touch is your liking, this is truly one of the best works ever. Read it, and your life will change.

The Poisonwood Bible - book cover picture

This book is so fascinating I can't put it down. It's been well researched as one can see from the bibliography at the end, and I feel I'm learning so much about one African country's tragic history, something they never told us about in school. I like one reader's comparison to the Mosquito Coast; the family power structure is very similar, as well as the white Americans' naivete and total unpreparedness for what they find.I'm almost at the end and find I dont want to let it go either. The characters (except for the father) have done so much growing throughout, and the plot never lacks for action. On a scale of 1-5, I'd give this a 6.

How to Cook Everything: Simple Recipes for Great Food - book cover picture

I never have enough time to cook. When I do make the time, the receipes I find require hours of prep work or exotic ingredients that I never have laying around the kitchen. I love Bittman's approach to simple, great tasting food with tons of variations and straight forward instructions. I have changed my typical after work meal from mac and cheese from a box, to pasta with sauces from How to Cook Everything. I was taken by his challenge to cook fresh foods and that it can be done in the time it takes to boil water. I think this is a must have, along with Joy of Cooking.

A compelling read on the issue of balancing work/family

Divided Lives: The Public and Private Struggles of Three Accomplished Women - book cover picture

I thought this was an excellent book and really touched on the issue of balancing work and family. It was fascinating to read the stories of very succesful women who probably appear very self confident about their very successful careers, but who are really struggling. I found it motivating to hear their stories of how they balanced work and family, even though some of it was a bit hard to relate to (i.e. taking a $50,000/year pay cut when you're making $450,000/year!). I found this book to be inspiring and a must read for anyone struggling with these issues.

beautiful story -- hateful reviews

Book title: The Giving Tree
Rating: 5/5

The Giving Tree - book cover picture

As with all literature, there could be a sub-plot, intentional or misconstrued. If the fact that the character is a boy and the tree is seen as feminine (as all nature is personified), then let the story switch itself around in your mind: a girl taking from a male tree. Does it matter? The story remains the same, one of unconditional love. We all live with the possibility of experiencing it ... It's our choice whether we become the tree or the girl/boy or, as is more common, a balance of both. Step down from the feminist calvary, already. You're giving us women a bad name...

For once, NOT a fad diet!

Book title: Eating Well for Optimum Health
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Eating Well for Optimum Health - book cover picture

All of the fad diet books out there advocate dangerous, unbalanced diets that do more harm than good. These include the protein diets that have seen so much publicity recently. Weil's book presents a sensible diet of balance, moderation, and variety, and while he has no selling point to lure weak-willed, gullible dieters to buy his book, what he does have is a clear expertise in the field of nutrition. It is deplorable that other "certified" doctors of nutrition would compromise their morals to sell their fad diets, just for money, while any college biology student can tell you that those diets severely compromise the health of your body. Buy this book if you want the real facts of nutrition. It's not a pretty truth that there is no EASY way to lose weight and be healthy, and any book that would tell you otherwise would be selling you snake oil. Eating well is a prescription for life.

Barbarians at the Gate: The Fall of RJR Nabisco - book cover picture

I read this book in 1990, and it remains the most impressive book on the business world I have ever read. Before I read this book, I thought the guys at the top had well-thought out plans and strategies for their companies - this book showed the flaw in that thinking. It was entertaining and an exciting book that exposed the reality of Wall Street and big business. It is the end of innocence for those who think strategic planning matters and thoughtful people are in charge somewhere.
