Croatia : A Nation Forged in War - book cover picture

Anyone interested in going beyond the standard media sound byte to understand the history of Croatia, will find Tanner's book an invaluable resource. Tanner chronicles in detail the long history of the Croatian people and emergence of the Croatian state, including the birth and shaping of national identity, personalities, myths and changing political panorama. While most works on the subject deal with specific, disjointed time periods of Croatian history, Tanner provides an insightful and comprehensive account - complete with references and facts rarely found in other sources. An enlightening read about a surprisingly complex nation and its turbulent path through the historical landscape.

The Beans of Egypt, Maine - book cover picture

I read this book in the early 1980's and it moved it. I was working for legal aid at the time and my director suggested it. I recently re-read the story and was even more compelled to think about those who are lost in the shuffle. Sure, the characters are straight from the Jerry Springer Show, but Chute somehow makes them more approachable. I can't think of any other book who tells this story as well....THE BOOK OF RUTH tried, but missed the mark when compared to this work.

Elementary Linear Algebra, Eighth Edition - book cover picture

My department recently adopted this book for our regular undergraduate linear algebra course upon the recommendation of a colleague of mine and myself. I am currently teaching from it and am delighted by it.The book is concisely written, with just the right amount of detail to help the student understand the concepts but without sweeping any tricky details under the rug. The topics are arranged in the right order to avoid unnecessary repetition. One can even use an appendix to integrate complex vector spaces fairly easily into the syllabus.A great book!

Maus a Survivors Tale: My Father Bleeds History - book cover picture

I happened upon Maus in the public library and was instantly captivated. Mr. Spiegelman has written down his family's experience in a way that is touching, heartwrenching, and compelling. I look forward to using this book in my work as a child therapist, with adolescents. The format will capture their interest in a way history books cannot. This contribution to literature is especially important now, considering the resurgence of white supremacist propaganda.

Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood : A Novel - book cover picture

This book was recommended to me from my college pysch professor. I orginally intended to give it my mother but started reading it and could not put it down. When I was finished I ear-marked and highlighted all the wonderful things that I thought my mother would enjoy and then sent it to her along with Little Altars Everywhere (also ear-marked and highlighted) for Mother's day. When she finshed it we talked for hours about how much we both enjoyed it and how much we both felt as though we didn't appreciate each other enough.I thought that Siddah was a hilarious character growing up in the South with an acholic abusive mother. If you don't know much about being in an abusive, which I do not, it certainly brings light to the whole awful mess. My mother enjoyed because she grew up like Siddah and I found that it actually brought us closer together than ever before.

From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler - book cover picture

This book is one of the best books I've ever read. It has a thrilling amount of suspense. It's about a girl that wants to runaway because she thinks she's not cool. She takes her brother and they hide out in a museum. The museum workers have a hunch that one of the statues in the museum was made by Michaelangelo. They go do a lot of research and they're almost positive that Michaelangelo sculpted it, So they go to the lady that sold the statue to the museum. She finally tells them who sculpted it. Could it be Michaelangelo? You'll have to read this book to find out.

Ted Williams: The Biography of an American Hero - book cover picture

Leigh Montville digs deep into the life of Ted Williams to discover what it takes to become the best. As we find out Williams' case, it was at the expense of his family and Montville gives an honest portrayal of a true baseball icon. Ted Williams was larger than life -- but he was still human and Monville isn't afraid to show the flaws. Williams was a complicated man for people to understand and mostly because he wasn't going to conform to what he was 'supposed to do'. This book is a must if you're a sports fan and even if you're not its good story of success against the odds.

Science is bang-on accurate; philosophically stimulating

Book title: Calculating God

Calculating God - book cover picture

One (anonymous) reviewer below tries to take Sawyer to task for discussing flagella (the whipping apendages on cells) in two different contexts, acknowledging not only Michael Behe's concerns about irreducible complexity, but also Lynn Marguilis idea that complex cells formed from various simpler life forms working in concert (an idea Sawyer himself explored in a very different way in his wonderful STARPLEX [Ace, 1996]). But looking at both sides like this is the WHOLE POINT of CALCULATING GOD. Sawyer's goal is clearly to promote dialog, and to show the strenghts and weaknesses both of intelligent design (not creationism, as the other reviewer wrongly stated) and neo-Darwinism. That he can engage in such a dialoge while still telling a literate, captivating story is very much to Sawyer' credit. This book is Hugo Award calibre, and I'd be surprised not to see it on next year's ballot.

Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. - book cover picture

When I was younger, I read Are You There, God... many, many times. It is an excellent book for girls because it deals with the issues that EVERY young girl is concerned with, even obsessed with. Margaret is a very realistic sixth-grader who's worried about boys, her body, and choosing a religion. Any girl, age 10-13 or so, would be able to relate to Margaret's concerns and should read this book.
