God Said, Ha! : A Memoir - book cover picture

I have always been a big fan of Julia Sweeney. When I found out that she had written a book I was pumped to get my hands on it. Finally when I picked up the book and started reading it, I was simply amazed. I could not put the book down. This book is full of emotions. I laughed, cried, sympathized and laughed some more. In this book she shares the hardships of the divorce from her true love, childhood memories, her family, and the main focus was when the news came that her younger brother,Mike, had cancer. She wrote about her family all comming together in a time of greif. I loved the title of her book. When I first heard it was wondering how it fit the book. To my surprize it fit it to a "Tee". Just as she thought her life was panning out "God Said,"Ha".

Infinite Jest : A Novel - book cover picture

A very long book, but alot of fun to read, not to mention brilliantly articulated.... The author takes on an approach to writing that I have not seen elsewhere, and combines that with the story telling of the ebb and flow of everyday life. With the exception of touchy Canadians, most people who don't mind a long read would enjoy the book and find things that directly related to their lives. The contrast of characters and plot is exceptional, and sheds some light on some of the best and worst things happening to people in the modern world. Addiction, relationships (not all men are scum!), perception, and the statue of liberty are only a few of the myriad of topics covered in this hefty book. Enjoy the reading, but beware of giant rodents and tennis academies!

first rate historical novel on the Renaissance

Book title: The Dwarf
Rating: 5/5

The Dwarf - book cover picture

This is a very fun and interesting historical novel that takes place at the transition point from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance in the Italian princedoms. The narrator is a superstitious and ignorant dwarf, a kind of bitter jester at the court, who is sometimes puzzled by his observations of the changes underway. He is full of hatred and suppressed violence and, in my view, wholly unsympathetic. Not only is the intellectual revolution of the period viewed from a skewed perspective, but the system of petty princes is magnified in all its savagery. The novel makes for a fascinating read, a wonderful and deeply textured view from the underside. Recommended with enthusiasm.

I Capture the Castle - book cover picture

I started this book around midnight and read for the next four hours straight. And then for some godforsaken reason, this book gave me an urge to go for a very early morning jog. I came home refreshed after my run and you know what I did then? Picked up the novel and resumed reading. This book was a breath of fresh air, it really makes a person hopeful. Cassandra Mortmain is witty and funny and makes you feel as if you are literally there with her in the castle. Some people may think it moves too slowly, but I think that is part of the charm. Every detail is "captured." This has become one of my favorites! Highly recommended.

Excellent one volume history of the American Revolution

Angel in the Whirlwind : The Triumph of the American Revolution - book cover picture

This is the first history of the American Revolutionary period that I actually enjoyed reading "for fun." Mr. Bobrick's obvious skills as an author have turned this exciting and inspirational period into just that. I knew this book was going to be fantasic about half way through the chapter on colonial America. While his focus is not on this period, Mr. Bobrick brings this era to life with colorful stories and interesting facts. I am a high school history teacher and am always on the look out for great stories and "interesting" history. THIS IS IT!!!

One Door Away from Heaven - book cover picture

Knowing a little of Mr. Koontz' background, I appreciate this novel for the evidence it shows of his tremendous personal oddessey. It seems to me that the two girls and the aunt each exemplify aspects of Mr. Koontz' psyche which he - like they - has managed, against all odds, to transform into gifts. The boy and his dog represent the sort of transformed world which could be capable of recognizing and accepting these gifts. Thank you, Mr. Koontz, for YOUR gift of a very inspiring story.

The Unexpected Man - book cover picture

After seeing the play and reading Yasmina Reza's 'Art' I went looking for other works by the author and found 'The Unexpected Man'. In 71 spacious pages, Reza manages to concoct a rich desert of fate, chance, fantasy, reality, past, present, and future which immediately invites a re-reading or 'second helping', if you will. I think that if you enjoyed the humor, irony, and contradiction in 'Art' you will find 'The Unexpected Man' a case where perhaps less is even more. A book to be savored.

Luminescent Descriptions of a Different Way of Life

Book title: Memoirs of a Geisha

Memoirs of a Geisha - book cover picture

This exquisite book was a gift to me. I usually prefer to choose my own books to read; my taste is eclectic and personal. I suppose everyone is the same way. If you are open to hearing a tale told in a luxuriantly long and expertly crafted manner, with visually rich scenes and a taut undertone of sensuality that pulls you toward the ending, you will probably like this book.It is as simple, and as complex, as anything that is nearly perfect. I think of the kimonos and the incredible descriptions that are given of them when I reflect upon one aspect of this book I found entrancing. I enjoyed learning things about the culture and I surrendered myself to the plot. Like a flower unfolding and blooming, MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA is a treasure to enjoy and keep in your memory.
