2001 - A Space Odyssey - book cover picture

2001 has since it's premier, been my favorite SF work of all time. Following my seeing the film, I bought the book. The novel was very different from the film (Saturn instead of Jupiter) but still an excellent rendering of a vision of a still possible future. It is not so much translation of Kubrick's film, but rather a reflection. Reading it gives answers to many questions and raises new questions in the process. Although this work exists only independently of ACC's later 3 sequels, it stand's on it's own and is a must for any SF fan. But I still do wish Clarke would go back and write a parallel novelization of the film. It would make the reading of the sequels a little less confusing for the readers who didn't or can't see the film.

Brian Horton's book is a must read for photojournalists. Do NOT be misled that this is only for Associated Press photographers. Brian has interviewed many photographers on many aspects of being a photojournlist. Be sure to check out his interviews with photographers on how they handle fast-breaking situations. This book is not an f-stop and shutterspeed book but gets into the photojournalist's mind.

Classic DeMille Tour de Force

Book title: Up Country
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Up Country - book cover picture

Nelson DeMille's finest book, hands down. "Up Country" has everything an adventure reader could ask for...in the first 200 pages!

Modern Vietnam is the setting and DeMille has his story cross over the entire country, all the while giving his readers a laser-accurate narration of each geographical location. Toss in a lead character with a platinum backstory that began in DeMille's previous work, "The General's Daughter" and a smartass wit to challenge any previous DeMille protagonist and you start to understand all of the glowing reviews this tomb received.

It's simple...buy this book and enjoy a contemporary fiction master's crowning achievement. Literary perfection.

Slinky Malinki, Open the Door - book cover picture

I see it in the bookshop regularly! Slinky Malinki and his friend Stickybeak Sid (a rainbow lorikeet) get up to all manner of mischief when alone in the house: Slinky malinki and stickbeak Sid were a troublesome pair; do you know what they did? Alone in the house one mischievous day, they opened a door and they started to play.I have not met a child yet who doesn't respond to the beautiful rhythm of the language and the sense of fun in the Lynley Dodd books. There is just the right amount of repetition in the rhymes to create a sense of anticipation. The illustrations are lovely, and Slinky really does have a mischievous glint in his eye! He is NOT drawn as a "human" - he is all-cat, but wow, those expressions, depicted through eyes, paws and the hair standing on end!

nice portrayal of teenagers but not completely accurate

Book title: The Catcher in the Rye

The Catcher in the Rye - book cover picture

I myself being a teenager enjoyed this book immensly. It was a very truthfull and honest portrayal of teenagers in general. However I felt that the main charachter Holden Caulfield was to cynical and to mature. His philosophies on life are not that of a teenager rather of an older person who has seen how horrible life can be an has become cynical and bitter because of it. Although teenagers are at times very deppresed they always have a sort of idealistic hope.

The title is somewhat "misleading". An excellent book...

Book title: Pope John Paul II: In My Own Words

Pope John Paul II: In My Own Words - book cover picture

I enjoyed reading this book (as much as I do other writings--not all yet, or ever--by this wonderful Pope of ours, a first-rate thinker with a deeply charitable heart).

For good measure, I do quarrel a bit with the title. You see, this isn't a book that the Pope wrote and published as such; rather, it is a compilation of his words from other sources. Therefore, in fairness to the reader as well as to the pontiff, I think the title should be "...In His (not My) Own Words", indicating that this is a compiled work, done by the goodwill of someone else (who is Anthony F. Chiffolo).

An excellent book, nonetheless.

Double Star - book cover picture

Okay, you've got to step aside one moment when you sit down to this book and remember two things: One, this was not written for adults, but instead teenagers. Two, this book was written FOREVER ago. (Mind you, it's still an enjoyable novel to me now, and I'm almost thirty, living in the 21st century.)My father came to me one day when I was in the seventh grade and said that he thought it was time I read Heinlein. This was the first of the books he gave me, and I literally took it, read the first sentence, sat down where I was, and started reading. Like most of RAH's work, this book provides a pleasant, entertaining narrative while making you think about some of the issues within-- racism, politics, professionalism, and personal responsibility.

At a time when most anyone would've given up, his perserverence and hope is a true inspiratioin for us all.
