4.5* Excellent Old-Fashioned Dragon Tale!

Book title: The Dragons of Blueland (My Father's Dragon)

The Dragons of Blueland (My Father's Dragon) - book cover picture

I love children's books that open with a map, and the "Dragons of Blueland" (the third in Gannett's series about the dragon) promises adventures in such exciting locales as "Seaweed Bay," "The Awful Desert," "Popsicornia," and the "Spiky Mountain Range."The book delivers, as Elmo Elevator, a "brave boy of nine," helps his dragon friend Boris rescue his family. The story is comforting yet cleverly exciting and humorous. The soft black and white illustrations (done by the author's stepmother, who also did the illustrations for the first edition of Steinbeck's "Tortilla Flat") are a gentle compliment to the text. First published in 1951, this is good fun!

Exploding Myths About Gender

Deceptive Distinctions : Sex, Gender, and the Social Order - book cover picture

(Author's description)This book offers a critique of the views and research that men and women possess essentially different emotional and cognitive traits. In a critical review of scholarship from the social sciences, history and philosophy, the book shows how scientific and everyday practices emphasize differences between the sexes and neglect reports of similarities. The book investigates the domains of work, leisure, education, politics and religion, as well as the microdynamics of interpersonal behavior--speaking, touching, and the use of personal space. It suggests that the belief and practice in difference supports the existing power structure.

Dancing Barefoot - book cover picture

I bought this book because wil was coming to Portland to do a reading and book signing. I have to say not only is this book a fabulous read...endearing, quick & funny...but wil is just as wonderful in person. In his stories and while he's reading you feel for him, laugh with him, and want to cry in all the right places. I am so excited for "Just a Geek" to be published, this was a wonderful teaser and everyone should pick this book up. Little Wesley has grown up and become a great author!

I hope Bear writes more novels in the Foundation Universe.

Book title: Foundation and Chaos (Second Foundation Trilogy)

Foundation and Chaos (Second Foundation Trilogy) - book cover picture

One of my favorite Foundation books is "Forward the Foundation". I did not think that Benford's novel added anything to the story between "Eto Demerzel" and "Cleon I" (I HATED the sims, memes, tiktoks, pans, and the characters did not seem right). "Foundation and Chaos" expanded on "Epilogue" and "The Psychohistorians". It has great characters and a great plot. I wish that Bear and Brin would have never mentioned the sims, and wormholes. I do not think that Brin's novel added much to the Foundation Universe. The plot was not as solid as Bear's and he tried to tie up the loose ends in a way that I do not think Asimov would have done. It seemed like it's main purpose was to tie up loose ends.

Edge-of-Control Satire

Book title: Cat's Cradle
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Paperback
Cat's Cradle - book cover picture

Are humans foolish enough to turn a gentle geniuses' idle curiosity to the end of the world? Cat's Cradle isn't anti-science, it's anti-people. This is a richly comic motley crew of characters and situations that forget plausibility in the service of the high art of low comedy. K.V. takes a stab at religion, industry, dictatorship, science, poverty, cold war espionage, the military, classism, love and devotion, and as always human foolishness and folly. The pace is quick, witty and full of more unexpected turns of plot than so few pages have a right to. All of it skewers with perfect timing and aim. Vonnegut's wild, satirical side at the edge of control. Classic.

Making Thirteen Colonies (A History of Us, No 2) - book cover picture

I teach fifth grade in Eugene and have used her books for a number of years now. I love using trade books to teach about history but Joy's books give children a framework from which to consider whether the historical fiction they so love is well written and researched or not. She teaches right along with me in my classroom through her books - we even have a framed picture of this author on our wall along with pictures of Lincoln, Washington, Frederick Douglass, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Her style is crisp and kid-pleasing. She deals with big issues and with important ideas. Children - and teachers - want to read her books over and over again because there is always something new to learn, something interesting to rediscover.

The Beauty of God in a Nun

Book title: Something Beautiful for God
Rating: 5/5

Something Beautiful for God - book cover picture

Among the hundreds of books written on Mother Teresa and her ministry, this is one of the earliest and the best. It has the very words of Mother Teresa with regard to her life, vocation and apostolate. The photographs and interviews included in the book make the portrayal of this nun and her work almost complete. Making a TV program about her and writing this book, were life-changing experiences for Malcolm Muggeridge. For someone planning to learn about Mother Teresa this may be the book to begin with.

Beauty's Punishment (Sleeping Beauty) - book cover picture

Of the three books in this exciting series, this is the second best. The third, by far is much better, and more interesting story-wise. I found I got tired of the same ol' S & M discriptions, over and over, and even began skipping pages at a time to find the story in this book. After the initial shock, giggling, and "can they really do that?" it's the story that propels the reader on. In this book, the story is ok, but not great.
