The Memory Book : The Classic Guide to Improving Your Memory at Work, at School, and at Play - book cover picture

I first read and studied this book in 1974 after getting out of the USAF. I attended a college in '75 where the first week was entirely freshman, over 500 of them. Before the end of the week I had all but two of their names memorized (I never met those two people.) It blew everyone away that I could remember their names after a 5 minute "hello." I graduated from this very difficult school with 3.65/4.0. After 30 years I am once again in training getting ready to test for the US Post Office where number memorization is paramount.

The Twelfth Planet : Book I of the Earth Chronicles (Earth Chronicles) - book cover picture

The first time I read this book, I laughed aloud - not out of amusement, but from joy. I was so delighted to learn that others found the same inconsistencies in traditional theories that I did! This book had a profound impact on the way I viewed ancient history - kudos to Sitchin for his dazzling, airtight investigations. At last, a real researcher tackling the issue of extraterrestrial life, instead of the same old half-baked alleged "abductees". Excellent, excellent book!

I ordered several adoption story books and this is by far the best one. It makes you laugh, it makes you smile, and it makes you happy. Most of the other books were very serious and very sad. This books explains adoption in a positive, fun way for children and adults. It has very possible circumstances and you can relate it to your particular set of circumstances. I will read the other books but this is the one I will read to my child over and over again. Do not pass this one up!

Ten Thousand Sorrows : The Extraordinary Journey of a Korean War Orphan - book cover picture

This book is brilliant. I loved it because of the way in which Elizabeth communicates with her readers--writing openly about her troubled life in such a way as to evoke emotion from her readers (at least from me). I cried a lot while reading this book because of its moving voice; Elizabeth writes with such clarity that it's easy for readers to follow along her story and she also writes with such emotion, making it hard for someone to read the book without feeling anything. I HIGHLY reccommend this book to anyone who wants to read about a courageous, outspoken, amazing woman who struggles to make it throught the upheavals in her life.

Great personal insight into Disney's inner workings

I bought this CD to listen on a long road trip and it really made my trip a lot more enjoyable. The narration was very good, considering that the author actually did it himself. Maybe that's why it sounds very personal, like he is talking to me. The story is fascinating, especially for someone who is interested in Disney and familiar with the 'cast' of executives in the story, some of whom I didn't know had any connection with each other until i heard this CD. It's a great audio CD and I highly recommend it!

Excellent introduction to the history of England

Great Tales from English History : The Truth About King Arthur, Lady Godiva, Richard the Lionheart, and More - book cover picture

If you're looking for in-depth analysis of English history, look elsewhere. However, if you want to get a grasp of the major figures and events of early English history, and have fun reading it, this is the book for you. The author has an eye for the details of history which tell a great deal about how the people of the time lived, without getting bogged down in dry trivia. He spends some time debunking popular myths, such as King Arthur and Lady Godiva, but the actual history on which the myths were built is far more fascinating. I especially appreciate his acceptance of historical figures as they were, as opposed to the judgemental, politically-correct attitude so many modern historians bring to their work. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants a quick overview of English history.

History That Helps You Understand the Headlines

War and Press Freedom: The Problem of Prerogative Power - book cover picture

Although published before the current war on terrorism, this book's historical overview of the relationship between media and the American government during times of war is strikingly relevant to today's headlines. Military tribunals for civilians? Abe Lincoln tried that in the Civil War. Another intriguing element is the discussion of how suppression of the atomic bomb's development -- by both the government and the media -- led to not only an ill-informed public, but an ill-informed president and may have impacted the final actions of World War II.
Filled with solid scholarly research, this book is still accessible to the lay reader and offers fascinating insight into our country's history. From the Revolutionary War to the Gulf War, it covers who, among journalists and politicians, took what actions in time of war; why they thought they were justified; and what impact these actions had on political, legal and military developments.

Riptide - book cover picture

Top notch blood-pumping adventure suspense led me to buy everything by this unstoppable pair of excellent story craftsmen. These guys simply write the coolest books. I really hadn't read anything in years, but due to this novel I've regained my lost love for plowing through a great book. A real page burner-turner RIPTIDE delivers the goods. Buried pirate booty never looked so appealing and deadly spooky as the writers have accomplished. The story flows along at break neck pace, and when it's over you crave more. I highly recommend any title in the Preston/ Child collection.

It's nearly impossible to overstate the importance of this book. In all the discussion about its influence on modern thought, however, the fact that it's a fantastically good read is often overlooked. Orwell's characters are crisply drawn and the world they inhabit startlingly real.Certainly it's one of the most important novels of the 20th century; just don't forget that it's also one of the best.

Split Second - book cover picture

Secret service agent Sean King will never forget the day a presidential candidate he was guarding is gunned down. Eight years later another agent, Michelle Maxwell find herself in the same hot water when the candidate in her charge disappears. She seeks out King to help her unravel the mystery. The narrative that follows is filled with unexpected danger as it becomes unclear as to who is tracking whom. As usual with Baldacci's plots it is hard to figure out who is the pursued and who is the pursuer. Another hit for this talented author.
