Daphne Du Maurier's Classics of the MacAbre - book cover picture

I read this book as a teenager and loved the strange stories. I only rediscovered that I wanted to read it again is because of the Johnny Depp movie "Netherland" The "Sylvia", Peter Pan's mother in Netherland story is a close relative of Daphne Du Maurier's. Probably Sylvia's niece. I can't currently recommend since I read the book 25 years ago, but I still remember the stories. I'm buying it again.

This book may not be as good as the others in the series, (which could earn about 6-8 stars), but this book is very good. I reccomend this book to ANYONE who can manage the vocabulary. For you who hate fiction, I suppose you can pass, but those who love fiction, adventure, settings from "long-ago" DON'T PASS ON THIS BOOK! My own copy is falling apart becuase my Dad reads it so much! I am only 13, and no matter what reading level you have, get this book!

Catcher in The Rye from a 19 yr old

The Catcher in the Rye - book cover picture

I'll admit first that the only reason I read this book was because of a Humanities Final. After finishing the novel I honestly thought i got absolutely nothing from it. Until I let it sink in. As far as ease of reading, it was very easy to read in a couple hours. At some points I had to put the book down and do something else to get interested again but it kept you wondering what was happening, or what was going to happen. The events and the thoughts that go through Holdens head are easy to relate to. After reading it you can actualy relate Holdens character to society rather than a person. I thought the book was a great read, I enjoy books that leave you with something without the intention of it. Rather than a moral or life's lesson, it leaves you questioning yourself and others, and what the word happiness means to each of us. Great book.

Extremely sad. Sad because to know that can still happen

Book title: A Child Called "It": One Child's Courage to Survive
Rating: 5/5

A Child Called "It": One Child's Courage to Survive - book cover picture

I think that this was definately one of the most heartwrenching books I have ever read in my entire life. I think that Dave is a very strong and corageous individual. I give him a lot of credit for enduring what he went through in his life. I feel that it because of what he did go through that it will make a better parent. I also, feel that it take a extremely strong will to survive because with out that will he could not have possibly survived. But i think he should know that both mother and father are to be equally blamed for the childhood he edured. I am a survivor of child abuse physically, emotionally and sexually. I think I have the attitude I have because of what I have been through. My boyfriend just recently tried to committ suicide because of being abused sexually as a young child.

The Bean Trees Anniversary Edition : A Novel - book cover picture

I think most people start reading Kingsolver with The Poisonwood Bible.....I liked it, but it wasn't something I'd rave about. So when someone told me to try The Bean Trees, I was reluctant. However, all other Kingsolver books are NOTHING like Poisonwood. Her writing style is completely different. The Bean Trees is an excellent "story" book. Easy to read, easy to get in to and an excellent story.

A wonderful seed to plant in the imagination of children.

Boxcar Children (Boxcar Children (Turtleback)) - book cover picture

My grandmother read this book to me 45 years ago, along with 4 others in the series, and I still remember it vividly. I read this to my children before they could read. My 10-year old son has now checked it out of the library and plans to read all in the series. I remember how it triggered my imagination and on those days all children have, thinking about running away, I would visualize what I would do living in a box car. Of course, I knew I could never be that brave, but to imagine it was quite fun. I think this is one of the classics all children should read.

How Much I liked This book

Book title: Black Star, Bright Dawn
Rating: 5/5
Binding: Hardcover
Black Star, Bright Dawn - book cover picture

This book, Black Star, Bright Dawn is really good, and I have read it quite a few times. The author, Scott O'dell had written many award-winning books, such as The Black Pearl, Island Of the Blue Dolphins, and many more.
In this book, Bright Dawn runs the Iditirod Dog sled race when her father is injured and loses a hand to severe frostbite. Bright Dawn wants to run the race in the place of her father but he dosen't think she can because she is a girl,
and no girl has ever been in the race before. When he finally lets her go, he does not want her to put her dog, Black Star, in front because he is half wolf. Bright Dawn finally convinces her father to let her go, and she sets out.
The book really discribes the dangers of the race, from the moose that can kill you or your sled dogs, to avalanches and the ever constant threat of loosing limbs to frostbite.
