145th Street : Short Stories (Laurel Leaf Books) - book cover picture

In the book 145th street weird things happend.Big Joe's funeral was gay becuase it didn't have any action.I think that the best story was block party because it was tight all the things that happened ience they started doing the party. The part of the book that i most like was when they did the wedding and it was really cool and exciting. Also i like that part because it was tight and i feel like reading that book again more and more times.I recommend that book to all the people specially to the middle school kids because it is very interesting for the people to read. And i recommend this book to the people that like action and that want to have fun for a while.

Out of the Box for Life: (Being Free Is Just a Choice) - book cover picture

In his book, Warren Berland guides the reader into a mode of consciousness and a way of acting that leap frog over many of the modern maxims for personal growth and problem resolution. He takes profound and seemingly complex wisdom and translates it for a modern age. After reading only a few pages, one begins to experience one's sense of self and place in the world in new and healing ways. As a psychotherapist and author who has waded through volumes of ponderous and ungrounded prose purporting to help the reader toward a better life, I feel reaffirmed by Berland's fresh, unique, and truly effective approach to personal transformation. This is one fine book.

Wings of Morning: The Story of the Last American Bomber Shot Down over Germany in World War II - book cover picture

This is an extraordinary book about an American airman and about Germany 50 years later. My mother in law is native German and was a young woman during the war. I shared the book with her. It has had a healing effect, I believe, because it brings home the universality of our humanity, the tragedy of losing a single life, and the awesome toll of tragedy in war time that is beyond comprehension. Childers manages to bring this tragedy home, but also is able to make this tragedy a universal story of redemption, in the end. More than about airplanes and flyers. Much more.

The Root Cellar - book cover picture

The childrens' librarian recommended this book to me when I was 7. Since then I have probably read it 10 or more times. Kids are fascinated by time travel and this book allows them to do so through an ordinary girl. With a little bit of history thrown in, this is not just a vacuous read like some kids books today. Don't be surprised if your child suddenly starts exploring the house looking for a way to travel back in time!

A very promising novel well worth reading.

A Gracious Plenty : A Novel - book cover picture

The main character of the novel, Finch Nobels, was a victim of third-degree burn. When she was four years old, she pulled a pot of boiling water off her mother's stove and received burns on her face and shoulders. Since her early teens, she had the ability to talk and see the spirits of the dead who lived in her graveyard. This novel expresses the relationship we have between the living and the dead very clear and realistic. I believe that there are people in this world that have the ability to communicate to both worlds.

I'm no Evelyn Woods speed reader, but I read this book in two nights. I just couldn't put it down! I apologize to my wife for not paying any attention to her during this time. This book had my heart pounding. As a Special Operator in AFSOC, and having spent 7 months in Saudi during Desert Storm, I could closely imagine and guess what Andy McNab went through. I wish I had read it when it first came out. Excellent read - Highly recommende

First Immortal - book cover picture

What a sharp and wonderful mind James Halperin has! I enjoyed every page of his imaginitive speculation about biological immortality and its implications. His well-developed characters are brave and noble, becoming even more so as nanotechnology extends their lifespans, enabling their perpectives and experiences to expand. Readers who worry that religion and mysticism hold too great a sway over so many people's lives will enjoy Halperin's vision of a future where science-based human innovation is properly recognized as the real savior of humankind. Halperin's philosophy and writing style remind me of Carl Sagan, who wrote The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark. Carl undoubtedly would have loved reading The First Immortal.

Disturbing and Thought-provoking

Brave New World - book cover picture

This is an amazing novel, and it's implications cannot be dismissed. I found it amusing how people disliked the novel for a lack a character development and other irrelevant aspects of the novel that, obviously, Huxley did not care about. The fact that people are degraded solely to acquiring pleasure is a powerful argument on Huxley's behalf. Chapter 17 is definitely the best chapter of the book. On a separate note, I want to praise Huxley for I think he is underappreciated to a sickening degree. In my opinion, he wrote the runner-up for the most underrated novel of the 20th century ("Point Counter Point"). Robert Penn Warren's "All the King's Men" is the undisputed winner for that award, however. Read all of Huxley's material though. He's a gift.

Color of Summer - book cover picture

The translation of this work is amazing - no way would you know that this delightful queen, Arenas, didn't originally write this in wickedly idiomatic English. He had to write this story, what?, seven times? It was confiscated, stolen, and lost over and over. And he re-wrote it over and over, until he could escape to freedom and finally see it in print. The story is a scream of queer humor atop the most tragic background of brutal state repression. Yet, in a way that only imprisoned Cubans seem to know how to do, his pride and dignity survive.
