Freakonomics : A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything - book cover picture

O.k., never mind if you disagree with the more controversial topics of the book, particularly the Roe v. Wade led to lower crime rate arguement. Read the whole book and evaluate it on its merits. Other economists wish they could be this entertaining and informative at the same time. Even though I'm an avid reader, it's rare that I stay up until 3 a.m. because I don't want to put a book down. I've never read, cover to cover in one sitting, a non-fiction book about a topic as potentially deadly as economics. This book was the exception. The ideas are riveting because, even though the book revolves loosely around economics, it's really about the human condition, what makes people do the things they do. Why do they cheat? How do they cheat? How can you prove it? There is no doubt that anyone with any curiosity about how the world really works will enjoy this book.

Blood Work (Blood Work) - book cover picture

A great book! If you like mysteries you will like this one. Connelly goes with a different character in Terrell McCaleb, an ex FBI agent who has had a heart transplant. He gets involved in trying to find who killed Gloria Torres. There are many surprises along the way. I had a hard time putting the book down until I could finish it. Terry uses all his past abilities to tract down the killer. Then when he does find him, what happenes? Need to read to find out. A great book.

Shocking look at life

Book title: Lord of the Flies (Penguin Study Notes)

Lord of the Flies (Penguin Study Notes) - book cover picture

Given the current state of the world, and especially current events as of this writing, it's hard to say that LORD OF THE FLIES is shocking. But it is, in its own way, and hopefully will remain so. In this Golding novel, society is held up for us to look at, through the actions of a few stranded boys on an island. Metaphors abound, and for good reason: Golding is trying to teach us something by putting our own society's evils on display via a group of gone-wild adolescents. And it works. The unfortunate thing is that we, as a society, seemed to not have learned the lesson Golding was trying to teach. This is a classic, stellar book with a superb message--if only we would listen. Would also recommend two other books as we read them in lit class: Cannery Row by Steinbeck, and Bark of the Dogwood by Jackson McCrae.

Data Abstraction and Problem Solving with C++ : Walls and Mirrors (4th Edition) - book cover picture

I would not recommend this book to beginners but this book is definately a good book for people with some programming foundation. Advanced data structures are well explained. We are using this book at school and I am totally comfortable with it. I can actually accomplish something that I've never been able to. On thing that reader need to understand is this book is mostly concentrated on advanced data structure concept. Some reviewers said that it is mostly psudocode and it is true because the author is trying to let you understand the concept of advanced programming. Anyway, this book is a good step stone for you to reach highest programming concepts and skills.

Meet Samantha : An American Girl - book cover picture

This is another in the American Girls Short Stories series about Samantha Parkington, a nine-year-old orphan girl living with her wealthy grandmother in the America of 1904. In this first book of the series, Samantha begins to learn about the world outside of her opulent house; she learns of the yawning inequalities that separate race, class and sex. Through it all, Samantha works on her needlepoint sampler that bears the simple motto "Actions speak louder than words," and Samantha puts that motto to work. This is an excellent book, with a wonderful story, excellent illustrations, and a great lesson. After each reading session, my daughter and I would have discussions about racism, child labor, and a host of other topics. I do think that this is an excellent introduction for children into some of the darker aspects of American history. We recommend it wholeheartedly.

Mike Nelson's Movie Megacheese - book cover picture

You know when you have a witty thought but you can't find the words to express it? That's the beauty of this book. Mike Nelson nails it down. It's not just a book for movie geeks or MST3K fans. Everyone can dig it because of Mike Nelson's numerous pop culture references ,from "She's The Sherrif" to McRib sandwiches. Unlike alot of today's humor, the skewering isn't mean-spirited, it's just on point.

Magnificient, thought-provoking photos

Saving Graces: Images of Women European Cemeteries - book cover picture

This is a beautiful book with wonderful, thought-provoking photos of weeping women, gladdened women, resting women, all kinds of women mourning a loved one. The essays by the author and by Joyce Carol Oates clarify the mystery of the sculptures and why they explain more about the living than about the dead. These photos were all taken in European cemeteries. Surely there must be a comparable book for the U.S. This one is well worth the price; it is truly exquisite.

Aftermath : A Novel of Suspense - book cover picture

I've enjoyed Peter Robinson's Inspector Banks series for many years. His superb storytelling skills have made this series one of my absolute favorites. The characters are always unique and well thought out; the stories are interesting with different twists. Aftermath is no exception. Personally, Banks is at an impasse with the women in his life. Professionally, he's at his peak. The storyline is not necessarily unique but the telling is. Terence Payne, the bad guy, is badder than most; his crimes are even worse. Throw in some more thought-provoking discussion on wife abuse, an horrific tale of child abuse and its aftermath and you've got an A-one story. Don't miss this one.

A great book as rare as a Silmaril

Book title: The Silmarillion

The Silmarillion - book cover picture

As a huge Tolkien fan myself, I found this book to live up to its full praise as a work of art. The Silmarillion was not only beautifully written, but very informitive as well. It discusses everything from the creating of the Earth, the many evils and battles that led to the downfall of its people, to the Numenoreans, and all the way to the forging of the rings of power. This book answers all questions or confusions left after the Lord of the Rings series, and is a must read for all Tolkien lovers!

Beloved Warrior (Perfect Heroes Series, 4) - book cover picture

A promising first for Judy DiCanio. When Loki, Viking afterworld mischief maker has his pride wounded by Dar, grandson of Odin, he send the immortal plummeting to earth and in front of vehicle driven by Jennifer Giordano. The heroine is alone in the world and short on funds. Against her better judgement she gives her "victim" a place to stay. Together they battle the forces of evil from both worlds who would do them harm. They are aided by Dar's dragon Firedrake, and absentminded geneous Snorri who is an expert on Norse mythology and an unfortunate employee of the intitute which wished to clone Dar's Dragon for evil purposes. A fun story with a sweet romance. Lor's story is next and I hope there will be more detailed info. on Valhalla and it's inhabitants. Great effort for Judy!
